According to the Academy of General Dentistry, a relationship between gum disease (periodontal disease) and health complications exist. These complications include stroke, heart disease. Women with gum disease also showed a higher incidence of pre-term, low birthweight babies. Other research showed that more than 90% of all systemic diseases have oral manifestations like swollen gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth, and excessive gum problems. These diseases include diabetes, leukemia, oral cancer, pancreatic cancer, heart disease, kidney disease. Most people have regular oral examinations, we may be the first health care provider to recognize a health problem in its early stage.
