Why Seniors Refuse to Eat?

Why Seniors Refuse to Eat?

As we know seniors tend to eat less as their metabolisms slow, but what if they won’t eat a balanced diet or hardly eat at all? Let’s review some common factors that can cause an elder to lose interest in food.

1. Loss of Taste and Smell
As we age, our sense of smell and taste can diminish. This affects how seniors can perceive food and can lessen their feelings of hunger.

2. Medication Side Effects
Some medications for Alzheimers, antidepressants, cardiac drugs, antibiotics and stimulants, have side effects that can reduce the appetite or cause constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bad taste in the mouth or dry mouth.

3. Oral Health Issues
If a senior appears to have difficulty chewing, they may have a problem with their teeth, gums or dentures. The shape of the mouth and jaw changes over time, specially if an elder has periodontal disease and/or an ill fitting denture. Dentures and partials can cause painful sores and irritation. Regular dental checkups by a Dentist or a Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice can prevent serious problems from developing.
